Swimming for a healthy world

I’ve been swimming in the Atlantic Ocean since I was a child. As an adult, I still love to swim. But now I swim vast lengths of dirty waterways like the Hudson, the Charles, and the Columbia Rivers, in order to put the problems facing our water planet squarely in the public eye.

I have survived collisions with boats, 12-foot waves, lightning storms, class IV+ rapids, giant dams, industrial chemicals, nuclear waste, oil slicks, raw sewage, toxic blue-green algae, and repeated Sea Lamprey Eel attacks.

As you can imagine, my adventures in the water help students get a glimpse of the mess we have made of our water planet, and my education efforts offer them a chance to help clean it up. The content varies with grade level, but every student gets to see pictures and videos of my swims, look at examples of the trash and pollution I have found, and brainstorm solutions for everything from global climate disruption to contaminated storm water runoff.
